Ode to Joe by chriscopeland Ode to Joe by chriscopeland
Hello all!

So as i sat down yesterday to begin actual work, i decided to take a look at my old Battle Chasers comic and was reminded of some of my artistic roots.

I mean we all went through that stage where you constantly bite someone, well, i went through it like CRAZY with ol Joe Mad, and i still love his stuff today, even though it would seem that hating on it is the cool thing to do these days.

I never had drawn the characters from BC, just i have never drawn the DragonBall characters, so i decided to do it as a warm up, and took it to a different level with some Prismacolor 30% Grey Marker and a Whiteout pen. Then i just scanned it in and played with some textures and usuall stuff.

Either way, this is for Joe, thanks for the inspiration man, PEACE y'all.

Oh, and this has nothing to do with my last journal post, so dont go thinking, lol. PEACE!

I love this! Joe has always been a fave of mine. This piece brought me to your gallery; which was an even bigger inspiration. I SHOULD be sleeping, but I still want to create after looking at your stuff.

This is awesome, man! Joe is one of the greatest. For me personally, he's the most exciting penciller in comics hands down to this day, though I guess he is not really totally "in comics" anymore unfortunately. I don't understand the haters eighter. One thing I have observed is a leaning towards more stiff realistic styles in today's mainstream comics so a stylized guy like Joe might catch some flack for that reason. The thing I saw you mention about folks saying his poses all being the same and not liking his shadows, man I don't know where stuff like that comes from, I never see Joe ripping himself off and his shadows are sick!

Anyway, I'm a Joe Mad fanatic till the day I die so I am not a great source for unbiased opinions of his work. Keep up your own slick stuff, it's awesome!

Thanks Jeff, i used paint brush, and Prismacolor Grey for the shading and then threw some tones and textures on it in PS.

dope piece kweli.

i know what you mean about the whole "biting" thing, but i don't follow when you wrote about everyone hating on him being the thing to do.

what do you mean? sorry, but maybe i have been out of touch with the comic book industry to know...

Haha, yeah man, i went through biting to a certain degree with every BIG artist out there at the time before i broke in. As far as everybody hating on him, i mean, you get a lot of people now-a-days that rag on the guy about certain artistic decisions that he makes, when it all comes down to it, we all make decisions that can be hated on by someone, but, i would think that as artists we would reserve those negative criticisms for jack-asses who deserve em, lol.

alright, i see what you mean.

i agree it's not right to bash people for "artistic decisions" made in comic books simply because in the real world, there are these things called deadlines.

hell, if i had to crank out how many pages in how long, i would probably make some "artistic decisions" too.

mad definitely made a huge influence on a ton of artists during his time in comics, rob liefeld on the other hand...

Cool pic. I think Joe Madureira was my fave of the Cliffhanger lot or maybe a tie with Chris Bachalo. Although I really dug all the cliffhangers.

Anyhoo, he's been working on a video game - Darksiders: Wrath of War, homesite - [link]

Mad rocks man! I don't undestand why people are hating him lately, if you look at his early work with Marvel and compare it with his work today, he has only gotten better and better. Although Michael Turner, may he rest in peace, is my favourite artist; there is something to be said about someone who can make the turtles look soooo hardcore. Keep believing my friend, anyone who says they didn't dig at some point or other is lying. EVERYBODY LOVES MAD!

This is a brilliant take on Garrison. I absolutely love it. I went through a crazy Joe Mad fan phase too... I still do. I get all fangirly when I see his work nowadays. :giggle:
Really like how painted your lines look and how loose and natural his pose is, despite carrying that beast of a sword around. Wonderful work!

hahaha, its easy to love him, he's a beast, and a helluva guy too. I still anticipate the things he does, lol.

The sword is made of Foam, thats why Garrison gets so much props cause he kills people with a foam sword, lol.
